Site Navigation

Facing challenges in scalability, flexibility, and consistency across devices, BigCommerce’s primary site navigation was in need of a redesign. I had the opportunity to lead our team in finding a solution that addressed these issues by creating a flexible, scalable UI that can support BigCommerce’s growing needs while prioritizing the needs of our end users.

User Testing

A significant aspect of the redesign was the extensive user testing conducted to ensure the new navigation met user needs. Testing revealed that users found the previous navigation to be overwhelming with a lack of contextual clues to help them parse the information presented. They found the new design offered a much more intuitive experience. The new grouping of items under subcategories resonated with users, providing better organization and clarity. Descriptive messaging under menu items further improved user understanding. Most notably, users engaged differently with the new navigation, focusing on areas relevant to their needs. This feedback was crucial in shaping the final structure, resulting in a navigation that is not only more flexible and scalable but also enhances the user experience based on direct input.
